A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE
SYNOPSIS:
A Matter of Principle is a contemporary political drama. It is the story of David English, a west coast journalist who quits his job rather than compromise his integrity. He relocates to his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA only to land himself in a bigger moral dilemma than the one he left.
Character Biography:
|
David English is an accomplished journalist. Although he’s made somewhat of a name for himself as a sportswriter, his ambition has driven him away from sports and into the political arena. David is a sloppy person. All of his life has been spent playing second fiddle to his older brother, James. He’s never excelled in anything other than writing. As a youth he was an average student, a mediocre athlete and a bit awkward -- a trait he stills carries in adulthood. David craves recognition. This need for validation causes him to make faulty decisions. However, his strong sense of integrity provides the balance that keeps him from straying too far down the wrong path. David’s strength is his passion for whatever he deems worthwhile. This is also a major part of his charm.

James English is a brash, career-minded, competitive soul with a big ego. He also has a nurturing side that makes him very protective of the people he loves. He’s slow to anger, but when he gets upset, he’s explosive and vicious. For a neatnik, he’s not too organized. James has come to enjoy and expect the finer things in life. He’s never wanted for anything. As a young star athlete, his parents, especially his mother, and coaches wooing him to attend their schools, pampered him. As an adult with a successful career, he still receives the same treatment. This lifestyle has had disastrous effects on his love life. He has grown accustomed to dating women who’ve catered to his every need. He has yet to experience a meaningful relationship that lasts more than a few months.

Brenda Taylor is quite the self-made woman. Her intelligence, wit and charisma have propelled her to the pinnacle of success as a lawyer. Her sweet disposition is an endearing quality that wields much power in her quest to become Pittsburgh’s first female African-American mayor. She can be cold as ice toward anyone who dares to cross her. Brenda is not one to forgive and forget so easily. Depending on the severity of her pain, one must withstand her wrath before earning her forgiveness. She’s known to hold a grudge for years -- decades, in some cases. A major part of this personality trait stems from the ceaseless abuse she endured for being overweight. Her “people” have been the primary source of her suffering in adolescence and part of her adult life. Therefore, she has no allegiance to them unless it works to her benefit. Her strength is her power of persuasion.
